Hosted by the Informatics Technology for Cancer Research Training Network (ITN)

Overview

Members of the QIIME 2 and Informatics Technology for Cancer Research Training Network (ITN) teams, will teach a three-day in-person workshop on bioinformatics tools for microbiome science. 

The workshop will include lectures covering QIIME 2 usage and theory, and interactive work with QIIME 2 to perform microbiome analysis from raw sequence data through publication-quality statistics and visualizations. This workshop will also feature several opportunities for attendees to network with other researchers in the field, as well as with QIIME 2 developers and other experts.

Topics will include:

  • Fundamentals of cloud computing 
  • Galaxy as a computing resource
  • Fundamentals for best practices for reproducible computation
  • Introduction to QIIME 2 
  • Core concepts 
  • QIIME 2 types, formats, and metadata 
  • Demultiplexing and quality control 
  • Phylogenetic reconstruction 
  • Measuring alpha and beta diversity 
  • Importing and exporting data 
  • Taxonomic analysis 
  • Differential abundance 
  • And more!

Prerequisites

Software/Equipment Requirements

It is preferred that you bring your own laptop; however, FAES can lend a laptop if needed. Please contact registrar@faes.org prior to the workshop to inquire.

Important note: This workshop requires participants to have docker desktop installed on their devices beforehand. This may require coordination with your system administrators, so please plan accordingly.
 
System requirements: Windows requires Windows 10 (Professional, Business, Educational, and Home versions), 64-bit processing, 4GB system RAM, Windows Hyper-V and Container features, and BIOS-level hardware virtualization.
Macs requires a 2010 computer model or later, OS 10.13 or later, and at least 4GB of RAM.

Additional Information

Credit

Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. One CEU is equal to ten contact hours. Upon completion of the course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 2.1 CEUs.

Training fees

$199.00 – Student, Trainee, Fellow, .Gov, .Mil – A student, trainee, or fellow who is affiliated with an academic institution or a participant who is affiliated with the NIH, other US government agencies, or US military (and has a .gov or .mil email address). 
$500.00 – Academic Pro – A participant who is affiliated with an academic institution, and not considered a student, trainee, or fellow.
$750.00 - General – A participant who is not affiliated with the NIH, other US government agencies, US military, or any academic institutions
