Course Description

This course is designed to help health providers to improve verbal communication skills with Spanish-speaking patients. It will help health professionals to build competence in interviewing, examining, and treating patients. It includes conversation and role-play situations in the context of different common medical situations. Students will learn the names of body parts, action verbs, and useful phrases typically used in a medical setting. Spanish concepts and correct pronunciation will be also covered.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Name and describe various parts of the body in Spanish.
  • Understand and communicate a patient's primary health concern.
  • Formulate and respond to basic questions.
  • Use numbers to communicate measurements and vital signs.
  • Pronounce and use Spanish medical vocabulary related to body organs, muscles, and internal systems.
  • Recognize and use cognates and give simple instructions.
  • Describe common symptoms and quantify pain.
  • Use vocabulary related to hospital and rehabilitation settings.
  • Communicate effectively in emergency room and pediatric care scenarios.
  • Use the imperative mood to give directions and commands.
  • Understand and use vocabulary describing pain and discomfort.
  • Communicate about basic ailments and illnesses.
  • Gain awareness of Latino cultural values and beliefs.

Prerequisites

SPAN 101, basic knowledge of Spanish, or permission from the instructor.

  • Weekly live sessions on Zoom, Thursdays, 12:30-2:00 pm
