Course Description

The objective of this course is to discuss how advances in genetics have impacted genetic disorders, from their diagnosis to treatment, by building upon the foundations learned in GENE 500. Topics include metabolic disorders, neuromuscular disorders, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, skeletal dysplasias, hearing loss, connective tissue disorders, genetic counseling end ethical issues in the era of genomic medicine. The course is designed as part of the required curriculum for residents, Fellows, and students preparing for the Genetics Certification Boards given by the American Board of Medical Genetics and the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Appreciate how recent advances in genetics have impacted genetic disorders, from their diagnosis to treatment.
  • Describe treatment approaches for different genetic disorders.
  • Discuss the technical and ethical challenges of diagnosis and treatment of rare genetic disorders.

Textbook Information

There is no textbook for purchase required for this course.

Prerequisites

GENE 500 or equivalent background in basic mechanisms of disease in genetics, inheritance patterns, and basic techniques used in genetics. If you have not taken GENE 500, please contact registrar@faes.org to be put in touch with the instructor.

Additional Information

Please note that this is a 14-week course offered in partnership with NHGRI, which includes required live sessions on Thursdays, 5:30-7:30 pm ET. The course will run August 28 – December 10.
